Microenvironment and Metastasis Laboratory, Molecular Oncology Programme, Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), Madrid, Spain.
Our group aims to understand the crosstalk between tumour cells and their microenvironment during metastatic progression. In this talk I will give an overview on how secreted extracellular vesicles play a role in pre-metastatic niche formation. Our studies are focused on deciphering novel biomarkers of metastatic progression and the molecular mechanisms involved in pre-metastatic niche formation to define novel therapeutic targets to block metastatic spread.

I completed my PhD in Dr. Amparo Cano’s laboratory in Madrid (Spain, at the "Alberto Sols" Institute for Biomedical Research), where I specialized in the analysis of mechanisms involved in the Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition. I joined Dr. Lyden’s laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College as a postdoctoral researcher in 2008 to study the communication mechanisms between tumor cells and bone marrow-derived cells during metastatic progression. My work demonstrated that tumor-secreted exosomes educate hematopoietic progenitors toward a pro-angiogenic and pro-metastatic phenotype. I joined the CNIO as Head of the Microenvironment and Metastasis Group. My current research focuses on understanding the role of tumor-secreted EVs in communication with the tumor microenvironment during metastasis and on the use of EV in liquid biopsies. I am the author of 117 publications since 2003, with over 37,000 citations, a SCOPUS h-index of 54. I was listed in the top 2% of researchers worldwide based on the Stanford and Scopus ranking. I have received several awards, including the ASEICA Young Investigator First Prize in 2015, the Pfizer Award 2016, Fero Fellow 2016, Marie Curie-WHRI-Academy Fellow in 2016, I3 Scientific Excellence Recognition in 2019, BBVA-Leonardo Fellow in 2021, and the national Doctores Diz Pintado Award in 2022.
