Short bio
Dr. Charles Lai is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. His work focuses on creating molecular bioimaging tools with high spatiotemporal precision to interrogate biological systems, notably bionanoparticles (extracellular vesicles) and DNA repair. His cutting-edge bioimaging platforms are used by more than 65 laboratories worldwide, fundamentally advancing research in cancer biology, bioengineering, and therapeutic development. His publications appear in leading journals, including ACS Nano, Advanced Materials, Advanced Science, Nature Communications, Nature Protocols, and Nucleic Acids Research.
Talk title
Seeing is Believing (or is it?): EV Imaging and In Vivo Visualization
Talk abstract
Extracellular vesicle (EV) imaging and in vivo visualization have revolutionized our understanding of intercellular communication by enabling direct observation of EV biodistribution, uptake, and functional integration within living systems. However, “seeing” EVs is not always synonymous with “believing” their biological relevance—limitations in labeling specificity, signal persistence, and imaging depth challenge the interpretation of visualized events. This talk highlights the evolving methodologies and interpretive caution required to distinguish genuine EV behavior from imaging artifacts in the quest for mechanistic insight.
